Chapter 71

‘Can we get room service here?’ She asked. ‘I’m ravenous. I could eat a small child with nits.’

I replied, ‘maybe? Don’t know. It’s pretty late. I’ll phone reception and see what’s what.’ I didn’t have much luck. It was just too late and she was only skeleton staff. But she did redirect me to the alcove above the fridge in which I found an assortment of small a packet biscuits, Mars bars, Cherry Ripes, chips, two chocolate bars and a few bits and pieces of other junk.

‘So here it is, Joey. There are quite a number of people after this book, and number one is me. Sure I want it back. It was something that John Prester hid from the world, but in a way it was still my inheritance. Now you know that Tilly McKinnon emailed me a copy of the translated section so I’ve read it, and what I can tell you is that if it were ever recovered and found to be authentic, the entire Christian religion would be in turmoil. So I’m saying that number two in the line of those who want it is the RC Church - or more probably one of its more extreme Orders. It is very much in their interest that this manuscript never sees the light of day. And that maybe explains your encounter with the phoney welders at the art gallery. Why would they use a Thermic lance to get to a document made of flammable material?’

‘The lance wasn’t to get to the document - it was to destroy it. And more’s the worry, they might just have succeeded,’ I chipped in.

‘We’ll make a private-eye of you yet, Joey. But I don’t think the book was inside that safe. Watters was nowhere to be seen. He was long gone before you or anyone else arrived. If he did have the book he’d have taken it with him. He would not have left it behind. Would he?’

‘No. You’re right. But I think we’ve got something else in our woodpile. I think that after he done a runner someone else got to him. I think I saw him a day ago – or what was left of him. If he had the book with him, they would definitely have it now.’

‘I hope he would have more sense. But I’m not near finished. Now the people that Tilly was originally working for when she found it were the present day remnants of the Knights of the Temple - Crusaders if you like. Around the early thirteen hundreds the Order were alerted to the fact that they were going to be attacked and massacred by King Phillip of France with the complicity of his mate the then Pope, so they gathered their most precious treasures and artefacts and, at the eleventh hour, sent them by barge to a safe-haven in England where they had friends and allies. However the barge never arrived at its intended destination and was wrecked in a fierce storm.
